When frost builds on the outdoor coil, the heat pump briefly reverses into cooling mode to melt it, and the indoor air feels cool for a few minutes. Auxiliary heat is supposed to cover the gap. If this happens every ten minutes or the outdoor unit is a block of ice, the defrost control has failed.
If the "aux" or "emergency heat" light is always on, your electric bill will show it. It usually means the heat pump itself has a problem and needs heat pump repair.
